| Birth: | Jan. 15, 1877 | | Death: | Jun. 30, 1947 |  US Congressman. A native of St. Peter, Minnesota, Tolan graduated from the University of Kansas in 1902 with a degree in law. After spending several years practicing in Montana, he moved to California in 1914 and established his law practice in Oakland. In 1935 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives representing California's 7th District, serving until his retirement due to ill health in 1947. In June of 1947, Tolan was vacationing with his family near Lassen National Park when his two-year old granddaughter went missing. Due to the resulting stress caused by the disappearance, he suffered a fatal heart attack and died several hours before his granddaughter was safely found.
