THE MUNCIE EVENING PRESS, JUNE 19, 1985

Ruth Mauzy McFadden, who for over a half-century reigned as social arbiter of Muncie during her tenure as reporter, society columnist and women's editor for The Evening Press, died early today in Ball Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Charlottesville, Va., she came to Muncie as a child with her parents, Homer G. and Rosa B. White Mauzy. She attended McKinley Elementary School, graduated from Central High School and attended Muncie Normal School, now Ball State University.

After six years of teaching kindergarten at Blaine School, she came to work for The Press in 1924 and transformed its women's news section, adding such features as an advice column which predated "Dear Abby." Her blithe column, "Ruth Mauzy McFadden Says," began in 1947, became one of the most popular vehicles for learning who was doing what in Muncie. Filled with chit-chat, fashion happenings, club news, and names of local people, it was THE place to be mentioned.

She had credited her parents and family with helping her gather news through their knowledge of Muncie.

Mrs. McFadden also pioneered the covering of engagements and weddings and was proud to have written the weddings of Gen. Mark Clark and Sen. Barry Goldwater, each of whom chose Muncie brides.

She was a member of the Muncie Chapter of American Pen Women, Altrusa Club, Women's Press Club of Indiana, Theta Sigma Phi journalism honorary and Paul Revere Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

A life member of Business and Professional Women and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, she was twice honored with the Demolay Hats Off Award and Woman of the Week adn Woman of the Month awards presented by WLBC-Radio.

Her husband, William, of 200 Alden, to whom she had been married 53 years, survives. He was formerly vice president and secretary-treasurer of the Muncie Finance Co. and a real estate broker.

Also surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Heeter, Muncie, and Mrs. Woodrow (Sarah) Gideon, Greenville, S.C.; two nephews, Robert Simes and Thomas Steck, both of Muncie; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Byron (Miildred) Mauzy and Mrs. Herman (Martha) Royer, both of Muncie; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services are set for 2:30 p.m. Friday in Meeks Mortuary Chapel. Entombment will follow in Elm Ridge Mausoleum. Friends may call at the mortuary from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday or an hour prior to services.
