He began his sports playing career at Mansfield High School in Mansfield, Ohio, excelling in many different sports from 1912 to 1915. He played tackle for the Canton Bulldogs from 1920 to 1923, and 1925 t0 1926, New York Giants in 1927, and the Pottsville Maroons from 1927 to 1928. He set the NFL record for the longest punt of 94 yards and longest dropkick field goal of 50 yards. He also served as Athletic Director at Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
