Born in Superior, Wisconsin, he was a star running back at George Washington University, when he was drafted by the NFL New York Giants in 1936. For eight seasons, he played with New York Giants, was a member of the Giant's NFL Championship (1938) and was an NFL All-Star twice (1938, 1941). He concluded his career with a record of 3142 yards rushing, 2324 yards passing, 442 yards receiving, 16 touchdown passes and 17 touchdowns. In 1978, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the New York Giants retired his number 4 jersey. He died at age 66 in Silver Spring, Maryland.
