The California Death Index shows a birth year of 1843; however, four census records and his immigration passenger list all concur that he was born ~1862. Whoever reported his birth information to the coroner was incorrect.

Jack immigrated in 1890 through New York and was later naturalized. By 1900 he was living in Damascus, Placer County where he and his partner Stephen Besseiggini were wood choppers supplying wood to the Pioneer Mine. Later he was a gold miner. In the 1940's he moved to Iowa Hill after his house burned and lived in the Macy cabin below the ditch. He was found dead by John Vanina on Dec 1, 1950. Father Vaughn officiated at his funeral. Doris Hobson put in his grave marker in 1986.
