Born in Clinton, Massachusetts, he was a power hitting outfielder nicknamed "Pony", whom occasionally made appearances as a pitcher. He made his Major League debut for the Chicago White Stockings on October 8, 1885, playing for the Stockings 1885 to 1889, 1891 to 1900, Chicago Pirates 1890 and Washington Senators 1902 to 1903. He is the only player in the history of baseball to hit for the cycle and pitch in the same game and was the home run leader in 1888. He ended his career with a .306 batting average, 118 home runs, 2,502 hits, 1093 runs batted in and 419 stolen bases. As a pitcher, he compiled 6 wins, 1 loss with 43 strikeouts and a 3.62 earned run average in 117 innings. He died in Chicago, Illinois, at age 60. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
