During World War I, he served as a Captain in the 314th Infantry from 1917 to 1919, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart, Legion d'Honneur, and the Croix de Guerre. He became engaged as an architect in Reading, Pennsylvania, and in World War II, served as a Lieutenant Colonel (later Colonel) in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, from 1940 to 1946. He was elected to the United States Congress from Pennsylvania, and served from 1947 to 1949. He resumed the practice of architecture in Reading.
