Birth: Feb. 16, 1895
McClain County
Oklahoma, USA
Death: Mar., 1962
Leon County
Florida, USA

Cecil R. Green was the second husband of my grandmother Caroline (Buhring) Junk; my father Robert B. Junk's stepfather; and the father of all 5 of Dad's half-siblings: Orval, Sylvia, Joe, Arnold and Phillip Green.

Sadly, Caroline uni-laterally gave my father the Green surname and Cecil's children the Skirvin surname (for her third & last husband) without benefit of adoption by these men. The reason for these name changes appears to have been bitterness.

Dad's birth father, George Junk, apparently did not have the constitution for homesteading. In 1918, he entered the military, but too late for WWI. Sometime before 1920, he left Colorado; returned to board in Pierre, SD with Caroline's sister & brother-in-law, Laura (Buhring) & Henry Highberger; and to earn a steadier living. Subsequently, after Henry died; Laura & George married.

Back in Colorado, Caroline worked as a traveling home nurse/midwife while holding onto the homestead in Lincoln County. It is unknown exactly how or when she met Cecil Green.

Cecil, his sister and brother-in-law, Jewell (Green) & Jake Candler, were farming in Linden, Washington County, CO. Also, one of Caroline's brothers, William "Bill" E Buhring, was homesteading there.
All three men received WW I Draft Registration cards in that County on 5 June 1917.
**Cecil's record stated he had a wife & one child along with his mother & father as dependents.
For many years, I thought it could have been Caroline & Robert. Until another Contributor found the grave of Barbara (Zook) Green, Cecil's first wife. As yet, I do not know what became of their child.

By the 1920 US Census, Cecil, Carolyn and Robert Green had returned to Missouri (the Candlers' birth State) along with Cecil's parents, Nancy (Hobbs) & William T. Green, Sr.; Cecil's younger brother William T Green, Jr.; and the Jake Candler family.

From about 1925 to 1935, all these folks moved to Oktaha, Muskogee County, OK (the Greens' birth State).
In the 1930 US Census, Cecil, Carolyn & their oldest four children lived in Leon County, FL, for awhile.
But most of the time, Carolyn & the children rode out the Depression in Oktaha. Cecil was a house painter and carpenter. He was gone often, presumably for work.

It is unknown exactly how or when Caroline met John Jasper Skirvin, who lived in Muskogee, OK. He also was a carpenter.
Dad was a telegram boy there, riding his bicycle back & forth from Oktaha. Also, he hand-plucked poultry at a Muskogee slaughterhouse for money. 5c for Chickens, 25c for Turkeys. His income was often all they had. At some point in time, Caroline bought a lot in Muskogee and a RR box car. She had it moved to her lot and the family converted it into a home.
There was bitterness in John's first marriage as there was in Caroline's with Cecil.

By 1937, Caroline, John Skirvin and some of her children were in San Bernandino, California. My Dad had already left home to join the CCC's and the US Navy.

Orval & Phillip married and lived in California with their families. They always used the Skirvin surname. My Dad & their sister Sylvia(until she married) used the Green surname. Younger brother, Billy Joe Skirvin, ran away from them to Oregon. Later he joined the US Army. Only Arnold remained at home. Joe & Arnie always used the Skirvin surname, too. Only one of the grandchildren has since changed his name back to Green.

Two of his five children with Carolyn mentioned seeing Cecil again, but only briefly. They all lived on the West Coast, Cecil in the South East.

*It is uncertain if Cecil every re-married.
Only know he died in Leon County, FL, in 1962. JT

*ADDENDUM/14 AUG 2013/Many thanks to Mary Shannon, Contributor #47148424. She created a FAG Memorial for Cecil R Green in 2009, along with one for his third wife, Lena M (Hale) Green...finally identifying his burial location for our family. JT

Survived death of his first wife, separation from his second wife & children by the economic hardships of the Depression, and finally, I hope, found some peace with the third in Florida.
