Born in Rochester, New York, he was nicked named ‘The Magnet' and made his debut as a right fielder for the Rockford Forest Citys on May 6, 1871. For five seasons, he played for the Rockford Forest Citys in 1871, Philadelphia Whites and Boston Red Stockings in 1873, 1875, Hartford Dark Blues in 1874, Chicago White Stockings in 1876 and is credited as the first player to introduce the base slide in an organized game. He ended his career with a .277 batting average, 1 homerun and 171 runs batted in. He also was the manager of the Philadelphia White Stockings in 1875 and the Cincinnati Reds in 1877.
