E. H. LEES ANSWERS SUMMONS
After a Long, Hard Struggle, Passes Away Wednesday Evening--Deaths of the Week
The summons that sooner or later must come to one and all of us has come to E. H. Lees. After a long, hard struggle against blood poisoning, Mr. Lees was able to resist it no longer, and at 7:30 Wednesday evening death came as a relief.
For nearly five weeks Mr. Lees had battled against great odds in an effort to overcome the poison that had gotten into his system. For a time it looked as though he would be able to withstand it, but other complications followed, one after another, until the body became so weak that resistance was no longer possible.
There are few men in Sterling better known than E. H. Lees. He was one of the city's own boys, lived the greater part of his life here, has been active in business, church, social and political affairs.
Essington Herbert Lees was born September 9, 1869, at Loda, Illinois. In the year of 1887 he moved with his father's family to Sterling, Kansas, which has since been his home. He completed his common school education here, then entered Cooper college and was the first graduate of that institution, he alone comprising the class of 1892. Two years later he graduated from the law school of the University of Kansas, came back to his home city and began the practice of law. During the intervening years he has followed his chosen profession, having his office in Sterling except fo rfour years, when as county attorney he was located at Lyons, the county seat.
In addition to his professional work Mr. Lees conducted a large insurance business and looked after his farming interests. He was the owner of considerable land in this vicinity and for the most part gave the farms his personal attention. Perhaps more of his time was given to the farm than to his professional business. Mr. Lees has served the city of Sterling as city attorney for several years, and was employed in that capacity at the time of his death.
Mr. Lees was united in marriage with Miss Adelle Spencer on October 25, 1899. Mrs. Lees and one son, Spencer, are left to mourn the death of a loving and faithful husband and father.
In 1889 the deceased professed faith in Jesus Christ, in the college church. Since then, he has been a member of the United Presbyterian church of Sterling.
He leaves an honored name as the best heritage to his sorrowing family and friends.
Funeral services will be held from the United Presbyterian church Friday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, in charge of the pastor, Rev. W. P. McGary.
