Miss Bessie Norman, age 80, of Jackson, died Saturday, January 24 at Inglewood Manor. Funeral services were held Monday, January 26 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park.
A native of Houlka, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Whitman and Nancy Penelope Norman. She was a graduate of Houlka High School. She received a bachelor's degree from Mississippi University for Women, a master's degree from the University of Mississippi and an associate's certificate in library science from the Universities of Alabama and Mississippi. She taught English and Latin at Iuka and Rosedale High Schools. In Clarksdale, she taught English and journalism for 16 years and served as librarian until her retirement on May 21, 1971. She served as sponsor of "The Spotlight" for 15 years and received the Gold Key Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. She served as chairman of the State English Teachers Press Association. She served as chairman of the State English Teachers Committee and was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the Clarksdale branch of the American Association of University Women and the Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was listed in Who's Who in American Education. A member of Capitol Street United Methodist Church in Jackson, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church while in Clarksdale and served on the board of stewards. She taught the adult Bible Class and served as secretary of the United Methodist Women. She was awarded life membership in that organization.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Loura N Hamric of Ackerman, Mrs. Evelyn N Hamric of Jackson and Miss Loraine Norman of Tchula and several nieces and nephews.
