Nicknamed the "King of the Umpires", he was the first great umpire in baseball history and one of the first who umpired on a regular basis. From 1884 to 1900, he umpired 1,104 Major League games in three different Major Leagues, the National League, American Association, and Players' League. Along with Tom Lynch, Gaffney was one of only two men to umpire in 12 Major League seasons in the 19th Century. His baseball knowledge was so vast that the Washington Nationals of the National League had him manage their club for the second half of 1886 and all of 1887. He went 61-101 in his managing career.
