| Birth: | Feb. 4, 1789 | | Death: | Apr. 7, 1840 |  US Senator, Connecticut Lieutenant Governor. Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, he graduated from Yale College in 1807, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1810 and returned to Norwalk to commence practice. After membership in the State House of Representatives (1815, 1830) and State Senate (1831), he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut and served three terms, under Governors John Samuel Peters (1831 to 1833) and Samuel A. Foot (1834 to 1835). A Whig, Betts was elected to the US Senate and served from March 1839 until his death in office. There is a cenotaph for him at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
