Charles Horace Upton
Birth: Aug. 23, 1812
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Jun. 17, 1877, Switzerland

US Congressman, Diplomat. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, he graduated from Maine's Bowdoin College in 1834 and two years later settled in Falls Church, Virginia. There he was active as a planter, wrote poetry, and held several local offices. With the outbreak of the Civil War Upton successfully ran for Congress as a Unionist in a special May 1861 contest, but this was disputed and turned over to the House Elections Committee. After nine months in office he was unseated by a House majority vote on February 27, 1862. In 1863 Upton was appointed US Consul to Switzerland by President Lincoln, and he served in that post for 14 years until his death in Geneva. He was interred at Congressional Cemetery. His grave is marked only by a footstone. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
