Alma A. Albanese

On Thursday, July 21, 2011, Alma Annie Albanese passed away at St. Francis Hospital in the Compassionate Care Hospice unit. She was born January 18, 1918 to George and Mary Jones of Wilmington, DE. She was 93.

She was the wife of the late Alexander P. Albanese who died in 2001. She is survived by two sons, John "Jack" and his wife Jean of Newark, DE, and Raymond and his wife Suzanne of Conowingo, MD; a grandson Robert Evans of Elkton, MD; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her eldest son Robert and his son Robert Jr. and a granddaughter Joanne Albanese, all of Wilmington. Also, preceded in death by her siblings, sisters Nellie Merril Russell, Virginia Bennett, Louise Allen Samworth, Elnora Healy and Betty Jane Evans; and two brothers Elwyn and George Jones, all of Wilmington, DE.

She was affectionately known as Aunt Alma, a hard-working homemaker and religious woman devoted to her God, church and family. She was of Southern heritage, her ancestors settling in Virginia and Southern Maryland in the 1600's. Her cooking skills were remarkable. Many drove miles for her chicken and dumplings. She was well loved by all who met her and will be sadly missed by her family. Alma was the last and oldest living of her era; a true matriarch. No one could ask for a more loving and caring mother. She was impeccably clean and believed cleanliness was Godliness; not materialistic, she worked with what she had and made do.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Compassionate Care Hospice for their time, compassion and genuine affection for our dear mother. Death was not the final for Alma as she believed that through faith in Jesus Christ, all that die will be resurrected and reunited in the Kingdom hope.

Friends and family are invited to visitation on Monday, July 25 between 10 and 11 am at MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington. A funeral service will follow at 11 am. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Compassionate Care Hospice, 702B Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
