United States Representative. A civil engineer before being admitted to the Illinois bar in 1845, he establised a legal practice in Belleville, Illinois. Having served in the Illinois State House of Representatives, he was elected to the United States Congress and served from 1859 to 1863. During the Civil War, he served as a Colonel in the Thirtieth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and was wounded at the Battle of Belmont. Following the Civil War, he practiced law in Washington, D. C. (bio by: Garver Graver)
