Canadian politician and businessman. Born in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures (Québec), on January 28th, 1856. He studied at the commercial academy in thecity of Québec City. He worked on clerical jobs, first with a prominentsaddler, then in his future father-in-law’s factory, Louis Tanguay, until1874. After that he went to Montréal and got involved in the shoe andhardware businesses, this from 1877 till 1879, then went at the service ofJos. Amyot and Brothers in Québec from 1879 till 1885.In 1885, he founded ahouse of novelties in Québec and joined, next year, Mr Dyonnet in a factoryof corsets which was later known under the name of Dominion Corset Co. Heopened, in 1894, a factory of boxes and, founded, in 1895, the brewery FoxHead. He was the director of the Technical School of Québec. Numerousbusiness responsabilities were his: President of Dominion Corset Co., of theQuebec Paper Box Co., of. Canada Corset Steel Co. and of the BanqueNationale; vice-president of the Banque Canadienne Nationale and of theBanque d’Economie de Quebec, of which he had been one of the administrators;and director of National Breweries, of Title and Guarantee Trust and ofQuebec, Saguenay and Chibougamau Railroad. He was defeated as the Liberalcandidate to the House of Commons in Quebec in the by-election of October23rd, 1906. He was named Legislative councillor of the division of Durantayefrom January 8th, 1912 till March 28th, 1930. As for his social and charityengagements, he was President of the Quebec Association of Manufacturers in1902 and of the Chamber of Commerce of the city of Quebec in 1906 and 1907;Honorary lieutenant-colonel of the 61th regimen; President of the QuebecAntituberculosis League and the Quebec Chapter of St.John Ambulance. He diedin office in Palm Beach, Florida, on March 28th, 1930. (bio by: Guy Gagnon)
