In 1850 he and his wife and nine children lived in Jenner Township, Somerset County, PA. He worked as a blacksmith, Jacob as a collier, Frederick as a wagoner, and Leonard and George as laborers.

In 1860 he and Nancy and three of their children--Frederick, Matilda, and Sarah--lived in East Wheatfield Township, Indiana County, PA. He owned personal property worth $80. He worked as a basket maker and Frederick as a furnace laborer.

In 1870 he and his wife lived with their son Leonard, his wife, and their seven children in Coopersdale, PA. Leonard worked as an engineer in a rolling mill and Michael as a laborer.

He was a Lutheran until 1848, and then became a Methodist.

He was a blacksmith and a shoemaker. For many years he lived in Cumberland Co., PA, and then moved to Armaugh and East Wheatfield Twp., Indiana Co., PA. He served in the War of 1812, enlisting in Carlisle, PA on Feb. 26, 1814 as a private in the George Hendle Company. He was discharged at Green Bush, NY in September 1814, having traveled from "Carlisle to Erie, from Erie to Buffalow, and from Buffalow to Green Bush, New York with prisoners". He died in Johnstown, PA in the home of his son, George, and is buried in the Boyer plot in Grandview Cemetery. He and Nancy were moved there from the Sandyvale Cemetery on April 20, 1900.
