Joseph Burden Echeverria, born June 3, 1962, died Dec. 28, 2008.
Our brother Joseph passed away Sunday morning. Many family and friends arrived to support him in his last days. He went with great courage and dignity. Joe was one of the strongest people I've ever known.
Growing up ranching in Wyoming and Colorado was tough, hard work. For Joe, all he did was extraordinary, considering his life-long struggle with cystic fibrosis.
He was also the most honest person I've ever known, holding himself to the highest standards even in personal honesty.
The outpouring of love from his friends and family was moving. People treasured his friendship. He would have made the world's greatest Trust Officer. He was a damn good sheepman, a great lamber, and one of the best irrigators around. A workaholic who knew how to have fun, a crack shot with a rifle, and a serious four-wheeler.
His doctors told him he couldn't work on the ranch anymore, so he moved to Arizona. Outliving his doctors' expectations by 25 years, his amazing strength and will to live are - well - amazing. All his remaining energy he put into his two boys.
Joe was a true intellectual, very well read, and could discuss and debate nearly any topic. He never gave up; his body just failed him.
Joe is survived by his mother Sophie, brothers Paul and David, sisters Elaine, Anne, and Sophie, his sons Ethan and Michael, and 14 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at Rancho de los Caballeros Sonoran Room, Saturday (Jan. 3) at 5 p.m.
