| Birth: | Oct. 5, 1836 | | Death: | Aug. 9, 1911 |  Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, US Congressman. In 1861, he joined the Confederate military as drillmaster officer for the 11th Tennessee Infantry. He served in East Tennessee, from 1862 to 1864 and fought in the Battles of Stone's River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Kennesaw Mountain, as well as the fighting in Atlanta. In August 1864, he was promoted Brigadier General led a brigade in the Nashville Campaign, was wounded at the Battle of Franklin, captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and elected in 1906, as a Democrat to the Sixty-first and Sixty-second Congresses, serving until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
