Nelda had been hospitalized for more than a week in Houston.
She was a graduate of Orange High School and went to college at Texas Woman's University in Denton. In the 1940's and 50's, she served 18 years on the school's board of regents. A multi-storied dormitory on the campus is named in her honor.
She was the third wife of Lutcher Stark, heir to the 19th Century timber fortune of Henry Jacob Lutcher, founder of the Lutcher and Moore Lumber Company in Orange. She was the sister of his second wife and 21 years younger than her husband.
Though continually listed as one of Texas Monthly Magazines richest Texans, she lived in her modest childhood home on Orange Ave.
