Thomas was born to Doctor Thomas Hinde of England and Mary Todd Hubbard of Virginia. He was a newspaper editor, opponent of slavery, author, historian, real estate investor, Methodist minister and a founder of the city of Mount Carmel, Illinois. In the church he was a figure of some note and a prolific writer of religious hymns. October 19, 1809 he married Belinda Bradford* in Cincinnati, Ohio. They had five children: Thomas Collins Hinde (October 15, 1810, Chillicothe, Ohio - September 20, 1815, Chillicothe, Ohio); Mary Allison Hinde (November 15, 1812, Chillicothe, Ohio - September 20, 1813, Chillicothe, Ohio); James Bradford Hinde (2/3 November 2/3, 1814/1815, Chillicothe, Ohio - December 6, 1876, Carmi, Illinois); Martha Howard (Hinde) Constable (September 5, 1817, Chillicothe, Ohio - February 16, 1866, Marshall, Illinois); James Madison Hinde (January 27, 1827 in Mount Carmel, Illinois - 1857, Zenia, Illinois). Sadly, the day after James was born, Belinda passed away.
Almost two years later Thomas wed again to Sarah Cavileer** December 22, 1828 in Springfield, Ohio. Three children were born to this union: Edmund Cavileer Hinde (April 6, 1830, Urbana, Ohio - December 20, 1909, Riverside, California); Charles Thomas Hinde (July/September 12, 1832, Urbana, Ohio - March 10, 1915, Coronado City, California); and Belinda Bradford (Hinde) Zimmerman (June 29, 1835/1839 in Urbana, Ohio - Death 20 June 20, 1865 in Mount Carmel, Illinois).
The Reverend Mr. Hinde penned an enlightening article on his parents April 1831 in The Methodist Magazine and Quarterly Review, Volume 13.
