Birth: 1822
Robertson County
Tennessee, USA
Death: Jan. 23, 1877
Galena
Cherokee County
Kansas, USA

In circa 1970 an elderly descendant of the Stone family self-published a small pamphlet regarding her family and ancestry from Thomas B.S. Stone and his wife Nancy Ann. As the memorialist's spouse is a descendant of the same family, more than ten years has been spent unraveling mistatements and juxtapositioned time frames in that pamphlet. This includes the claim, proved erroneous, that Thomas and his wife Nancy Ann were separate participants of the 1838-39 forced removal of the Cherokee Indians from Tennessee to Indian Territory (now eastern Oklahoma) on the famous Cherokee Trail of Tears. What is briefly summarized below is the best understanding of the truth so descendants can better understand their ancestry.

Thomas B.S. Stone, patriarch of a now well extended family, was b. at Robertson County, TN but has no known specific date of birth. Who his parents were remains unknown-they were NOT Nimrod H. Stone and Sarah Craig Russell of Kentucky and Indiana. What Thomas' two middle initials stood for remains undeciphered.

Comparison of multiple records indicate Thomas was b. on or before May 12, 1822. In particular, Thomas' recorded discharge from Union Army service states:

Thomas B. Stone in George W. Evans Company, Phelps Regiment of Missouri Vols., who was enrolled on the nineteenth day of October one thousand eight hundred and sixty one to serve six months, is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States, this twelfth day of May, 1862, at Springfield, Mo., by reason of mustering out of Regiment. Said Thomas B.S. Stone was born in Robertson County in the State of Tennessee, is forty years of age, six feet -- inches high, Fair complexion, Dark eyes, Auburn hair, and by occupation, when enrolled, a farmer. Given at Springfield, Mo., this twelfth day of May 1862.

Per his widow Nancy Ann's 1891 application for a Union Army Civil War pension (subsequently awarded), Thomas d. Jan. 23, 1877, but Nancy did not state where. [*1] Per the 1904 History of Cherokee County, KS, "T. B. S. Stone" died at Galena, KS in 1877. He likely is interred at the "Old" Galena Cemetery at Galena, KS. However, until about 1900 a local mortician owned that cemetery and kept very poor burial records.

By affadavit in her 1891 pension application, Thomas B.S. Stone m. Nancy Ann Murphree on Dec. 23, 1841 at Greene County, Arkansas. In addition, that Nancy Ann's maiden name was Murphree, not Collingsworth as stated in the descendant's pamphlet. Further, under provisions of the 1890 pension act, a widow was required to identify all of her then living children age 16 and older, ostensibly to indicate whether she had alternative means of support. Nancy Ann did so by naming her living children by initials and the year of their birth:

"J. N. - in 1843 (John Nimrod);
A. H. - in 1853 (Alonzo H. "Lon");
A. M. - in 1855 (Amanda Melissa);
M. A. - in 1857 (Mary Ann);
T. M. - in 1859 (?Thomas? Maurice);
N. P. - in 1863 (Nancy Phelps);
Claude in 1865"

In the 1860 census of the family at Ozark County, MO, four children of the household match the above initials; i.e., John N., Alonzo H., Amanda and Mary E., latter likely Mary Ann. The two William Stone's listed in 1860 residing with the family do not relate to the stated family and there is no reason why the family would have had two living sons in the household named William. William N., age 13, was likely William Nicholas Stone, s. of George W. Stone, Thomas B.S. Stone's deceased brother. Thus, by elimination the younger William R. Stone in the household, age 2, may have been a child of the family but died young. Yet, no child remotely named Maurice b. in 1859 appears in any of the family's censuses. Nonetheless, he was living in 1891 when mentioned by his mother in her pension file. It would not be until the June 1900 census that a wife or widow was asked for the total number of children she had given birth to and how many were still living. Nancy Ann (Murphree) Stone d. July 28, 1896 and is interred with gravestone at the Old Galena Cemetery at Galena, KS.

July 1871 (1900 census) at Wausau, Wisconsin and was living with her 2nd husband in May 1910 at Newton County, MO. Two known children of the family.

[*/1] Nancy Ann's pension application first stated, by the Justice of the Peace who wrote the application, that Thomas d. Jan. 23, 1878. This was later corrected by affadavit under Nancy's own hand to Jan. 23, 1877, with the pension file summary of all affiants and corresponding dates corrected to reflect a death date of Jan. 23, 1877.
