Joe was a farmer near Eldorado IL. untill the big flood in the early 1930's when they moved to Mt Vernon and he went to work for Nelson Concrete and worked there until he retired in the 1960's. Times were hard in the early 1900's and because he worked at a cement plant when a family member passed away he would make their headstone which was a square piece of concrete with their name and date of birth and death on it. As times got better and it was affordable the headstones were replaced with professional made headstones. The only headstone not replaced is the Marcine Lloyd Smith headstone. It is still in Sursa Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois.
