MUNCIE--Lowell E. Jones, 81, passed from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born February 26, 1930 in Bedford, IN, the son of Cecil Jones and Nellie (Jones) Polk. Lowell moved to Muncie with his family at age 13, where he attended Wilson Junior High School and Muncie Central.
He served in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War as an air policeman and sergeant in charge of the armory in Korea. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church for many years and volunteered in the church food pantry and loved being a greeter. He had a passion for woodworking and spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ilene Jones, Yorktown; two daughters, Terri Hutchison (husband-Stephen), Muncie, and Kimberly Peters (husband-Gilbert), Daleville; three grandchildren, Stephanie Hutchison-Phillips (husband-Christopher), Grant Peters and Kaitlin Peters; one sister, Norma Sue Doty; two special cat children, Lucy and Mindy; special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Nondius Justice; two special friends, Joe Gettinger and John "Sonny" Bradburn; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dencil Vurtus and Cecil Harold; and one sister, Elsie Long.
Services will be held 10 am. Monday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Delaware County. Family and friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
