He was a popular character performer known for being a gangster or villain in hundreds of films and TV shows. Trained at the Pasadena Playhouse, he made his film debut in "Johnny Apollo" (1940), followed by "The Bride Ware Crutches" (1940). His other credits include "The Glass Key" (1942), "Phantom of the Rue Morgue" (1954), "City of Shadows" (1955), "Young Dillinger" (1965), "Zebra Force" (1976), "The Legend of Grizzly Adams" (1990), plus many more. For television, he appeared as a regular on "Death Valley Days", "Zorro", "Maverick", "The Virginian", "Star Trek" and "Gunsmoke", where he played 14 different characters on the series.
