Jordanian Monarch. She served as the Queen of Jordan from July 20, 1951 to August 11, 1952, becoming Queen after the assassination of her husband's father, King Abdullah. In 1934 she married Talal and had four children, the future King Hussein, Prince Muhammad, Prince El Hassan, and Princess Basma. She was well known for her pioneering efforts in charity work and her support of woman's rights. In 1944 she established the first woman's union, and in 1948 she helped Palestinian refugees coming into Jordan after the Arab-Israeli war, by leading national relief efforts to help the tens of thousands. Also that year she became instrumental in establishing the woman's branch of the Jordan National Red Crescent Society, later working on the UM Al Hussein Orphanage in Amman, Jordan. In 1952 she took part in the writing of the Constitution which gave full rights to women and enhanced the social development of Jordan. The Queen was considered to be a true pillar of modern Jordan and of being a symbol to all Arab women on the balance between Islamic traditon and a modern outlook.
