Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. Towards the end of the war he served as Chief of Artillery on the staff of Major General Quincy A. Gillmore. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services during the war". (bio by: Russ Dodge)
