He entered his Civil War service at the age of 21 when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company C, 22nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry on July 15, 1861. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on December 3, 1861, nearly a year later he was commissioned as the unit's Regimental Adjutant (November 30, 1862). During the 1864 Atlanta Campaign he was promoted to Major (August 5, 1864), and held that duty until he was mustered out on January 1, 1865. A month later he was commissioned as Colonel, and given command of the newly-raised one year enlistment regiment 145th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He led the regiment through the end of the war, and in post war occupation duty before it was mustered out on January 21, 1866 at Cuthbert, Georgia.
