Lt. Col. Larsen was the Squadron Commanding Officer of the 33rd Transport Squadron based at Wideawake Airfield, Ascension Island, during World War II.

He died when the Lockheed P-38L 'Lightning' he was piloting stalled after takeoff from Midland Army Airfield, Texas and crashed 5.5 miles NE of Midland.
