CITY OFFICIAL'S FUNERAL
Services Over Remains of Engineer Who Was Drowned in Sewer to be Held Tomorrow
The funeral of Henry G. Parker, assistant city engineer, who fell into a manhole at Hyperion, near Redondo Beach, yesterday afternoon, and was drowned, will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the undertaking parlors of Peck & Chase.
Mr. Parker, who lived at No. 3025 Foster street, was probably overcome by sewer gas. He had been supervising repairs to one of the flood-gates in the sewer, and had been down in a manhole about 1000 feet from the point where the sewage enters the ocean. The gas was present in such quantities that he feared for his life. He had climbed the ladder and was sitting on the edge of the manhole, with his legs hanging inside, when he fell.
Charles F. Derby, superintendent of the sewer, when Parker disappeared, ran to the beach and hailed some Japanese fishermen. They rowed their boat to the place where the sewage is discharged and recovered the body.
Mr. Parker, who was 40 years old, leaves a widow and two small children. He had been connected with the City Engineer's office for five years, having charge of bridge building. He was born in Minnesota, but came to this state when he was 7 years old. He was graduated from the Santa Ana High School and, in 1890, from the University of California. For a time he was a bridge engineer for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad.
The verdict of the Coroner's jury at the inquest held at Ocean Park yesterday morning, was that the assistant engineer came to his death by accidental drowning.
