Joseph C McCoy was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted 2 Oct 1861 at Henry County, Iowa, at the age of 24. Mustered in Co D 4th Iowa Cavalry 26 Nov 1861. Re-enlisted and re-mustered 19 Dec 1863. Promoted Eighth Corporal 1 May 1864; Seventh Corporal 1 Jul 1864; Fourth Corporal 1 Jan 1865. Wounded in action 16 Apr 1865 at Columbus, Georgia. Two soldiers were killed, nine wounded, and one taken prisoner. Joseph mustered out 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

Joseph married Martha J Allender on 25 Mar 1866. They had two children: Ida and Martha. They lived in Furnas County, Nebraska before moving to Wichita, Kansas. Joseph was a member of GAR Post # 163 Nebraska.

Joseph died in Kansas at the age of 84 years.
