Herbert Mitchell Parker, 86, former Minot State University educator, coach, athletic director, and administrator died on Sunday, October 7, 2007, in a Minot nursing home.

Herbert M. Parker was born on January 18, 1921, in Jamestown, ND, to Percival and Emma (Kribbs) Parker. He was raised and educated in Nekoma, ND, graduating from Nekoma High School in 1938 and from Jamestown College in 1942. While in college, he was captain of the basketball team and an all-conference athlete. Herb received his master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO.

On August 9, 1942, Herb married Marjorie Wilson in Washburn, ND. They made their home in Dickinson, ND, where Herb taught and coached at Dickinson High School for five years. In 1947 the family moved to Minot. For the next 36 years, Herb served Minot State University. He taught physical education classes and coached football, basketball, and track. He was Athletic Director from 1947-1959 and from 1974-1976. In 1959 Herb became Dean of Men, a position he held for 24 years. Herb was involved in the development of expansion projects at MSU, particularly the addition of the Dome and the upgrading of the track and football field. In addition Herb served as the faculty representative for the NDCAC and the eligibility chairman for the NAIA District 12. Herb also officiated football games for twenty-seven years and basketball games for twenty-four years. He managed three state Class B Boys Basketball tournaments and numerous regional and state track meets. Herb retired in 1983.

In recognition of his achievements, Herb received many honors. Among them are inclusion in the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame, Jamestown College Athletic Hall of Fame, ND Officials Hall of Fame, and NAIA Hall of Fame. In 1983, MSU named the university football stadium in his honor. He was also a recipient of the MSU Alumni Golden Award.

Herb was a member of Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot Country Club, and Eagles Aerie and was a former member of the Elks Lodge, Minot Y's Men's Club, and Rotary Club. He served on the Board of Directors of Norsk Hostfest and MSU's Board of Regents for many years. He was also a charter member and long-time secretary of the Beaver Boosters Club.

Herb was a devoted and loyal supporter of MSU. He especially enjoyed attending athletic events and golfing. In addition, Herb appreciated music and enjoyed singing and playing his ukulele, banjo, and guitar at family and social gatherings. He was known for his sense of humor and was a friend, mentor, and respected role model for numerous people.

Herb will be missed by his many friends and his loving family, including his wife of 65 years, Marjorie; children: Pamela (Leo) Kinsella of Hilton Head, SC; Herb Jr. (Vangie) Parker of Williston, ND; Zoe Ann Healy of Rugby, ND; son-in-law: Jerry Healy of Rugby, ND; granddaughters: Andrea (Bruce) Buckless, Kim (Chris) Pagel, Melissa Parker, Tara (Jack) Hallberg, Megan Healy, Taryn Healy, Marie Parker, Becky Parker, and Cherisse Parker; great-grandchildren: Connor Buckless; Luke, Vaughn, and Kennedy Pagel; brother: William (Marilyn) Parker of Fargo, ND and sisters-in-law: Ruby Parker of Nekoma, ND; Patricia Parker of Minneapolis, MN; Zoe Van Ness of Bellevue, WA; and Holly Wilson of Fargo, ND; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Cathryn Skaug and brothers: Charles and Dr. John Parker.

Service: Monday, October 15, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. in Vincent United Methodist Church – Minot.
Interment will be in the First Lutheran Church Cemetery adjacent to Minot State University.
