Harold C. Bold

Botanist. Bold was born in New York City in 1909, where his grandparents had moved to from Germany and Switzerland. As an undergraduate at Columbia University, he decided to pursue botany as a career. In 1929 he earned his Bachelor's degree and found work as an Instructor in Botany at the University of Vermont. He began studying the coccoid green algae, Chlorococcum, and obtained his Masters degree from Vermont in 1931. He returned to Columbia as a Ph.D. student, where he studied the green algae, Protosiphon. In 1933 he sent out more then 100 job enquiries and received a job offer for an Instructorship in Bology from Vanderbilt University for a salary of $1,800, a year. He accepted and stayed at there through the 1930s, later going to Nashville, Tennessee, where he met his wife. He returned to Columbia and became a Visiting Lecturer and then Assistant Professor of Botany at Barnard College, and from 1942 to 1945 he served in the United States Naval Reserve, returning to Vanderbilt after the war, where he became a professor. In 1955 he became a Charter Member of the Society and served as its President until 1956. In 1957 he moved to Texas and became Professor of Botany at the University of Texas in Austin, where he stayed until he retired in 1978. In 1962 he became Chair of the Department of Botany, later becoming President of the Botanical Society of America, and Editor of 'The American journal Of Botany.' Bold served as a major advisior to 10 master and 43 Ph.D. students, later co-authoring the book, "Psychological Studies" with some of them. From 1960 to 1974 he co-authored several textbooks on the subjects of algae to morphology of plants. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. (bio by: K)
