"Doc" Beckman, 82, of 126 New Delta Avenue, Manistique, Michigan died on July 10, 2011 at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

He was born September 4, 1928 in Hiawatha Township, Michigan the son of Frank and Madge (Caffey) Beckman and attended schools in Sault Ste. Marie and Manistique. He was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1946.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army in Korea.

On June 9, 1956 Harold married Margaret "Peggy" Harrington at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique.

In his earlier years, Doc sailed the great lakes and later worked as a warehouse clerk at the Inland Lime and Stone Company in Gulliver until his retirement.

He was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Gulliver. He enjoyed gardening, caring for the outdoor birds and ducks, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and helping his neighbors. In his younger years, he enjoyed ice fishing. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Detroit Tiger fan.

Doc is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Beckman of Manistique; sons; Joel (Nancy) Beckman of Cooks and Thomas (Robin) Beckman of Santa Margarita, CA; daughter, Barbara (Larry) Kerridge of Naubinway; son Dick's fiancée, Cindy DeHaan of Manistique; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sisters, Marian Hewitt of Manistique and Ruth (Grant) Taylor of Manistique; sister-in-law, Marie Sellman of Manistique; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard "Dick" Beckman; and his brother, Leonard Beckman.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm, on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A veteran's memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm, Sunday, at the funeral home with Del Alden officiating.

Burial will be in the Hiawatha Township Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Manistique Senior Center.
