Monroe Cain Victim of Treacherous Waters
Body Not Yet Recovered
Daily Guard May 14
A.M. Griffin, of the upper Willamette country, was in town today and told a Guard reporter of the drowning of Monroe Cain in the Willamette river Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Cain and two boys, Neet and Sharp by name, were coming down the river in a row boat about six miles above the Hyland place and about 25 miles from Eugene, when at 2 o'clock the boat in some manner was over-turned. The occupants were precipitated into the water and the boys succeeded in reaching the shore in safety but Mr. Cain was unable to do so and was drowned.
The river was dragged for the body without success, so Mr. Griffin came to Eugene after dynamite which will be used to raise the body.
The drowned man was married and was aged about 30 years. He was well known in the upper Willamette country and his tragic death has cast a gloom over the neighborhood
