From a "Memories" collection written by Claude's sister,
Olga Irene (Warner) Penzin, 1989:

"...After World War I, one of Claude's earliest occupations was running the projectors at the theaters my dad, Newton V. Warner, owned. One of these was the Idle Hour at Lowell [Kent, MI]. Claude ran the projector, my mother [Mary D.] sold tickets, my brother Alva took tickets, my brother Royden played the piano, and my father "lectured" those silent films. Claude seems to have been the chief photographer [of the family], and developed the pictures of those early "carefree" days. He used to play a clarinet until he lost a finger in a factory accident.

"[Claude] was exempt from serving in the first World War because of his need to support his family. One of the ways he supported them in the following years was through his skills as a painter and decorator. Settling finally in Coopersville, [Ottawa], MI, he worked as a tool and die maker, and retired from that only because if he kept working, one young worker would have to be laid off. In 1915-1928, he worked at Reo in Michigan.

"With Leila he took some trips around the United States, photographing the sights in slides and movies, and also photographed extensively his own family, including his 15 grandchildren.

"Claude and Lelia celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in the spring of 1964.

"They had been spending winters in Florida and their summers in Coopersville, [Ottawa], MI, until just before one trip to Florida, in the fall of 1964, Leila died very suddenly. After that, Claude stayed some months with his daughters, then continued spending the winters in his trailer in Florida.

"He developed the fine art of weaving baskets, trays, and napkin holders from long pine needles and rattan. Through this he met Pauline Price, a widow from Michigan, and they were married on May 6, 1967. They spend summers at Elberta [Benzie], Michigan, and winters in their trailer at Zephyr Hills, [Pasco], Florida.

"Of Claude's daughters, Eva lives in Florida; Ruth, Arda and Lorna in Michigan; and Mary Alice in California...by 1989, he had two great-great-grandchildren.

"It is so good to see how well he is getting along, largely because of Pauline's care. He reads a lot, stopped weaving, then started it again recently, because he was bored. He now uses a walker, but has generally good health. He can name the birth dates of his five girls and tell you the ages of all his cousins and close relatives who lived into their nineties."

Photos (2016) of some of his baskets are from his granddaughter, Yvonne (Larabel) Munson and Race. Many pieces of his basket weaving are scattered among his descendants. Writes Yvonne: "...item that our Grandpa Warner made from pine needles. He made bowels, trays, purses, napkin holders. Even when his hands were shaky. Each of us girls were given a gift. These were given to mom. Priceless!"
