Baughman attended high school in Michigan City, Indiana where he was the class valedictorian. He received his appointment to the United States Naval Academy in 1944 and graduated in 1947, the last wartime three year class and was commissioned Ensign on June 6, 1947. He elected to pursue aviation and entered flight training and earned his wings as a Naval Aviator on March 31, 1950. He was assigned to Squadron VP-22 and now a Lieutenant JG flew 100 combat patrols in the Korean War, earning the Air Medal with 1 Star. Baughman then attended the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California earning his Master of Science Degree in Nuclear Engineering. He next was assigned to the Naval Air Systems Command where he served as project manager of the S3A aircraft and was promoted to Rear Admiral. His last active tour of duty was as Commander, Pacific Missile Test Center in Pt. Mugu, California. At the time of his retirement he was the ranking Aeronautical Engineering Duty Officer and the senior line officer on active duty. For his service he was awarded numerous medals from WWII, Korean and Vietnam including the Legion of Merit with 2 Gold Stars. After his retirement he worked in the private sector in various aeronautical pursuits as well as founding a consulting business. He also assisted the Navy and Department of Defense in developing the AEGIS ballistic missile defense system. (bio by: Saratoga)
