James Henry Trent, who escaped from Germany after Kristallnacht and fought heroically with the British Army, passed away May 5, 2011, in Denver.

Rabbi Selwyn Franklin and Cantor Joel Lichterman officiated at the May 8 graveside service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

"In his industry, he was a respected professional," the family said. "At home he was a loving husband and father and a beacon to his extended family."

Mr. Trent was born Dec. 18, 1919, in Leipzig, Germany.

A well-educated man, he escaped to England after witnessing the horrors of Kristallnacht in 1938.

Mr. Trent was a veteran of Dunkirk, the London Blitz, the Normandy landings and the liberation of Europe. He was honored for his distinguished military service.

He came to Denver in 1946.

Mr. Trent married Gretel Stern on June 21, 1947.

A retired furniture wholesaler, he belonged to BMH-BJ, the Jewish War Veterans and the Furniture Wholesalers Assn.

Mr. Trent is survived by his wife Gretel Trent; children Judy (Steve) Sterner and Deborah Trent; grandchildren Ruth Sterner and Ricka Sterner; and sister-in-law Edith Kern.
