Charlotte Alvena Rothe, 88, died Friday, July 8, 2011, at her home six miles east of Jerseyville,IL.

Charlotte was the daughter of the late Jesse Benjamin Kirchner and Marie Josephine Egelhoff Kirchner. She was born on March 16, 1923, in Jersey County, six miles east of Jerseyville on the same farm where she died. She was the oldest child of three with one sister, the late Doris Kirchner Cairns; and one brother, the late John O. Kirchner.

In her youth, she attended Paradise School through eighth grade, worked on the family farm, and was employed at the shoe factory in Jerseyville.

On June 14, 1941, Charlotte married John H. Rothe, who preceded her in death. They lived one mile east of Brighton for over 20 years, and they raised their daughters, Carol, Sharon and Linda. Charlotte was a full-time homemaker and John worked at Standard (later Amoco) Oil Co. In 1969, they moved back to the farm where Charlotte had grown up.

As a devoted and active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brighton,IL for over 60 years, Charlotte taught Sunday school, helped sponsor youth groups, and served in the women's groups. She was a loving, caring wife and mother whose many interests included sewing, quilting, embroidery, cooking, canning, gardening, caring for the farm animals, caring for her flowers, keeping a daily log of life, and participating in the garden club and home extension activities.

Charlotte is survived by three daughters and three son-in-laws, Carol Nichol and Wayne Smith of Little Falls, MN, Sharon and David Knepper of Jerseyville,IL; and Linda and Paul Bishop of Madison, WI; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Peter Nichol, wife, Makie Tam, and children, Sophia and Stella of San Francisco, Rachel Bishop, husband, Ben Boer, and children Charlotte Rose and Mia of Chicago, John Nichol, wife, Emily, and children, Abby and Caitlin of Minneapolis, Erin Bishop, husband, Jon Van Roo, and daughter Shannon of Madison Wis., Dana Bishop and husband, Josh Carter, of Shelburne, Vt., and Ben Bishop of Duluth, Minn. She is also survived by brother and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, brother and nine brothers-in-law and sisters-in law.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 11,2011 at the Targhetta and Wooldridge Funeral Home in Brighton,IL. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 12,2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Brighton,IL. Burial will follow at the Brighton City Cemetery, Brighton, IL.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Brighton,IL.
