US Navy Rear Admiral. Burrowes graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1925. Upon graduation he was commissioned an ensign and was assigned duty aboard the battleship, USS West Virginia. Burrowes was Commander Destroyer Squadron seven which operated in the Pacific during World War II. From January of 1951 through February of 1952 he was commander of the USS Wisconsin and in 1953 he was promoted to Rear Admiral. He next was appointed as Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel for the Naval Reserve and Commander of Destroyer Flotilla Three, Pacific Area. In 1956 he was Commander Military Sea Transportation Service from May to August of 1956. He next was the Director of Logistic Plans Division from September 1956 to September of 1958 and Commander Service Force, Atantic from September 1958 to June 1960. He was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry as Commander Destroyer Division 106 during action against enemy Japanese forces in the First Battle of the Philippines Sea on June 19 to the 20th, 1944. He was also awarded the Legion of Merit with Combat "V" for his actions. In addition to the Silver Star and Legion of Merit he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V' as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer USS Abner Read in action against the enemy Japanese forces during the assault and capture of Attu Island, Territory of Alaska. Burrowes retired in 1960 after the conclusion of his Command as Commander Service Force, Atlantic. (bio by: Saratoga)
