He was elected vice president under Arnulfo Arias in 1949 and appointed Minister of Finance and Treasury. Arias was ousted from power by the National Guard, and Arosemena took the presidency on May 5, 1951. His tenure was marked by civil and economic crises which hindered significant accomplishment. He organized new elections and completed the presidential term on October 1, 1952. The newly elected Jose Remon appointed him ambassador to France in 1953.
