Diaz Arosemena attended Christian Brothers School and studied law at the College of the Isthmus and Seton Hall University, New Jersey, in the United States. He served as Mayor of Panama City and President of the National Assembly. He was elected vice president under Harmodio Arias Madrid from 1932 until 1936. After a number of defeats for the presidency, he was finally elected and took office August 7, 1948. (The voting results of this victory over Arnulfo Arias Madrid remained questionable due to intervention by National Police Commander Jose Remon.) During his short tenure, he sought unification of the Liberal Party and promoted commercial aviation through the newly opened Tocumen International Airport. Following a heart attack, he resigned on July 28, 1949, and died mere months later. As a businessman, he sat on the boards of Central Dairy, the International Insurance Company, and the National Cooperative. (bio by: BluGraver)
