Born in Marianna, Arkansas, he began his career in the early 1930s as a stage performer and made his film debut as Gabriel the Angel in "The Green Pastures" (1936). A popular character performer he appeared in "It's A Great Life" (1936), "The Green Pastures" (1936), "Underworld" (1937), "Gone With The Wind" (1939), White Cargo" (1942), "Reap The Wild Wind" (1942) and "Cabin In The Sky" (1943). In January 1949, he was fatally injured after being hit by a taxicab as he stepped off a curb in New York's Time Square. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
