Minta Sarah Niccum was born in Warren, Clinton County, Indiana, to Taylor Webster Niccum (born Feb 12, 1837, Decatur Iowa; died Dec 5, 1913 in Oneida, Kansas) and Phoebe Gordon (born Jul 24, 1834 in Dixon, Ohio; died May 6, 1908 in Nemaha, Kansas).
By the time Minta was 12, her family had moved to Jackson, Preble County, Ohio.
In 1902, Minta married Robert Lincoln Bird (born 1863 in Addison, Pennsylvania). They lived on a farm in Berwick, Kansas for about twenty years. Minta and Robert had two sons, Owen Chelsea Bird (born Feb 21, 1903) and Robert Paul Bird (born Nov 26, 1909). Sadly, Robert died when he was just over a year old, on January 23, 1911.
In the early 1920s, Minta, Robert and son Owen moved to Placentia, California, where Robert and Owen found work in a lemon packing house. They lived at 131 Melrose and later moved to 219 Melrose.
Minta's husband Robert died May 24, 1935. Minta stayed at 219 Melrose until at least 1940 and later moved to Santa Paula, and lived next door to her son Owen and his family (Owen and family were at 213 North Sixth, Helen at 213-1/2).
In Santa Paula, Helen saw her grandchildren Owen Jr., Nancy and Sara graduate from high school and is pictured here with son Owen and grandson Owen Jr. at his high school graduation in 1949 from Santa Paula High School. She must have felt great pride in her son Owen - at the time of her death Owen was Treasurer-Manager of Briggs Lemon Assn and Vice President of Ventura County Citrus Growers Committee, owned commercial property near the railroad station and was active in the Rotary Club and other local organizations.
Minta lived a long life and died at the age of 88 on August 26, 1956. She was buried at the Loma Visa Memorial Park in Fullerton, California, along with her husband Robert.
