Edwin Starcher, 54, local superintendent of East Knox schools, died suddenly at noon today during a fire that destroyed his home at Esto in Butler Township.
Fire Chief Charles C. Imel of Gambier told the Mt. Vernon News, "Starcher died before we arrived and it looks like the house will burn to the ground."
Mrs. Leo Underwood, whose husband discovered the fire at noon, said Starcher's body was found in a car at the house after he was summoned from the school. She said he had carried a few things out of the house, which was owned by the Underwoods.
Starcher, who observed his 54th birthday Tuesday, had been local superintendent at the former Howard schools and East Knox Schools since 1957. His wife Opal is a teacher in the East Knox high school, where their daughter Anne is a student.
Underwood told the News, "Mr. Starcher is dead. Dale Hammond, the Danville fire chief, discovered the body and used the rescusitator, but he did not respond."
Starcher was a World War II veteran. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Bladensburg, the Consistory and Aladin Temple.
Survivors are his wife, Opal; a daughter Anne, student At East Knox; five sisters, Mrs. Eva Cain of big Bend, W.Va., Mrs. Julia Tucker of Waterford in Washington County, Mrs. Edna cooper of Spencer, W.Va., Mrs. Nettie slider of akron and Mrs. Bernice Smith of Grantsville, W.Va., and one brother, Thurman of Arnoldsburg, W.Va.
Friends may call after 3 p.m. today and until noon Sunday at the Harris and son Funeral Home in Bladensburg where a masonic service will be held tonight at 8.
The body will be taken to the Howard Methodist Church at noon sunday for the funeral at 3 p.m. the Rev. lee Fettters will officiate.
following the service, the body will be taken to the Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville, W. Va., where additional services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Starcher Cemetery at Rocksdale, W.Va.
