Initially enlisted in Co. B 44th New York "Ellsworth Avengers" on 9 September 1861 in Albany, New York as a private. In order to get into this regiment one had to be at lest 5 feet 9 inches in height, single and of good moral character. He enlisted for 3 years.

On 29 September, 1861 he was transferred to Company G on 29 September 1861. He was promoted to Sgt. on 29 December 1862 and to 1st Liet. on 28 February 1863.
