Fr. Odilo Ortmann, OSB
1888 - 1931
Odilo Ortmann was born January 3, 1888 in Meire Grove, Stearns County, Minnesota, the ninth (and last) child of Bernard and Bernadina (Kruse) Ortmann.
The Ortmanns and their four oldest children immigrated from Holdorf, Westphalia, Germany to America in 1880. They went directly to Meire Grove, Stearns County in Minnesota where the family settled.
Odilo Ortmann graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. and continued his theological education at Mount Angel, Oregon were he was ordained into the Order of St. Benedict (OSB) in 1918. At Mount Angel University, Fr. Odilo taught mathematics.
Pontifical Requiem Mass
Fr. Odilo Ortmann died on August 21, 1931 in Mount Angel, Marion County, Oregon at the age of 43 years. His brother, Fr. Ansel Ortmann, OSB, journeyed from Minneapolis, Minnesota to the Mount Angel Abbey in St. Benedict,Oregon so he could participate in the requim mass, officiated by the Archbishop of Portland. Also, nearly 60 monsignors and priest took part in the funeral service. The deceased priest was buried in cemetery of Mount Angel Abbey in Mount Angel, Oregon.

In addition to the Benedictian family in Oregon and Minnesota, Fr. Odilo is survived by his 83 year old mother, Bernadine (Kruse) Ortmann Meyer and seven of his siblings. His nephew, Fr. Cyril Ortmann OSB of St. Paul, Minnesota, two nieces in the Order of Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota also survives him.
Fr. Odilo was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Ortmann in 1895, an infant sister and his sister, Mrs. Katherine (Herman) Nathe of Meire Grove died in 1921. His step-father, Hermann Meyer, died in February 1917.
