Wayne Durlam, 40, co-owner of Durlam Bros. Electric, was fatally injured Monday when the truck he was driving crashed into the Raccoon river bridge south of Jefferson on highway 17. He was taken to the Greene County Hospital where he died shortly after the mishap.
Robert Bradley, 40, of Jefferson, a Durlam Bros. employee, was a passenger in the truck and was treated for cuts and bruises.
The pickup truck was traveling north down the steep grade approaching the bridge when it went out on the shoulder. The truck traveled 136 feet on the shoulder before smashing into the southeast corner of the bridge. The accident was attributed by the highway patrol to gusty winds and vibration in the truck which limited control. A post prevented the vehicle from plunging into the river. Time of the accidnet was 12:10 p.m.
The victim and his twin brother, Wendell, founded Durlam Bros. Electric in 1848. A native of Jefferson, Wayne Durlam was an aviator during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Trudy; three daughters, Kay 12, Jan, 9, and Kim, 6; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Mike Durlam of Jefferson; six brothers, Loran, Mike Jr., Wendell, Eugene, Gerald all of Jefferson, and Vernon of Des Moines; three sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Lynch and Mrs. Maynard Kenyon of Jefferson and Mrs. Eldon Kellogg of Storm Lake; and a number of nieces and nephews.
