From the Vergennes, IL newspaper: Mrs. Henry Schenk, Sr.
"Mrs. Henry Schenk, Sr., died Thursday, January 2, 1908 at 11:00 p.m. at the old homestead place where she has resided the past 50 years. Mrs. Schenk has been an invalid for the past 8 years, having suffered a stroke of paralysis in 1900. She was born in Whittenberg, Germany, September 30, 1830, her age being 77 years, 3 months, and 13 days. She came to America in 1858. Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her death 8 children who are as follows: Mrs. Will Weber, Murphysboro; Mrs. John Horner, Carbondale; Mrs. Theodore Bowyer, Carterville; Mrs. Ely M. Wilkerson, Pinckneyville; Mrs. Jake Bechtlofft, Vergennes; Mrs. Joe Collins, Ava; Louis and Henry Schenk, Jr., Vergennes; 26 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, besides 3 sisters and 3 brothers who are: Mrs. Catherine Schroadt and Mrs. Rosine Schoch, Murphysboro; Mrs. Christina Bruder, DuQuoin; Christian Schmidgall, DuQuoin; Henry Schmidgall, Murphysboro; and Fred Schmidgall, DeSoto.
Funeral Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Allyn Grove Cemetery. She was a member of the German Lutheran Church. Six sons-in-law acted as pall bearers. Rev. Bradley of Vergennes officiated."
She was the daughter of Johann Georg Schmidgall (1797-1861) and Katherina Lulise Glueck (1805-1870), both of whom were born in Germany and died in Jackson County, IL.
